TEHRAN (IQNA) –  Sheikh of al-Azhar Ahmed al-Tayeb underlined the responsibility of religious leaders to work for promoting peace in the world.

Speaking in a meeting Tuesday with a group of Christian bishops from Norway, the Egyptian cleric said the “significant mission of realizing global peace” ought to be shouldered by leaders of faiths.

He added that peace will be attained through commitment to moral values highlighted by religions.

Al-Tayeb further referred to the historical ties between Islam and Christianity and recalled that the Christian king of Abyssinia (now Ethiopia) welcomed Muslims who had escaped tyranny of non-Muslim rulers of Mecca in the early years after the advent of Islam.

He also stressed that al-Azhar seeks to enhance peaceful coexistence among followers of different faiths.

The Norwegian bishops, for their part, hailed al-Azhar’s move to launch dialogue with Christian churches and reiterated the need for efforts to uphold peace and dialogue in the world.
